Dune Review | Denis Villeneuve

Dune Review

Dune (Part One) arrived in cinemas and simultaneously on streaming services just over a week ago, and my was it worth the wait. Having first watched it in IMAX, followed by a repeat-viewing at home, we can safely say that Dune has the potential to be the the epic-adventure series of this decade, similar to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars from days past.

Taking the hero’s journey and turning it inter-galactic, Dune has a sense of scale and realism that imbues elements of director Denis Villeneuve’s past sci-fi efforts (Arrival, Blade Runner), while backed by Hans Zimmer’s captivating and hypnotic score. Many moments that were strongly reminiscent of the Dark Knight trilogy, and it’s clear that the mutual respect that Christopher Nolan and Vileneuve share runs deep.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the cinema going experience has taken a backseat as we’ve all sat deeper into our couch seats, and become more comfortable with watching large scale movies at home. Dune is a reminder of the magic of movies designed for the best audio-visual environment possible.

With part two now confirmed, we can expect to hear the Litany against fear at least once more, and hopefully more audibly this time!

Denis Villeneuve

Sometimes it’s easier to show, rather than tell.

Here’s a clip where Denis Villeneuve explains everything that went into making the ‘Gom Jabbar’ scene from the movie. This is clearly a true master at work, and even though he’s not that expressive, his sheer excitement and child-like energy at getting to create the art he holds dear, is wonderful to see.
